The Muse is a feature experimental film directed by Max Karpylev from Siberia who now works and lives in Los Angeles. It’s the story of an unemployed novelist who has a publishing contract for his next novel. His father is unhappy with his career move and wants Mark to get a real job. The tension between father and son is apparent.

Tragedy, expectations, and death are themes of this film which shows the struggles and challenges of an author trying to complete his book. The loss of Mark’s wife adds a third dimension as she encourages him to finish the book for her. Her support of him is crucial in moving forward with his novel. In the end, reality overtakes the author’s depressed lifestyle highlighting his pain and suffering.

The film is really about the complicated relations between a father and son. I explore how loss and fear might be the most potent enemy of creativity. The hero struggles between an illusionary yet happy world and a harsh reality.
